holy shit, what's wrong with people
Today while I was at work over at WSU (i'm actually still here as I write this). I was trolling news sites looking for exciting breaking news. Unfortunately the story I found was a little too fucked up. http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/02/02/gay.shooting/index.html. After reading stories like this I cannot fathom how people still say that there is no civil rights movement for homosexuals. Or in some cases people admit there is one but say it is completely unlike the one African-Americans endured. And I wasn't even planning on blogging today! It's people like Jacob D. Robida (the suspect in the above story) that physically embody the ignorance in a supposedly modern society. It appears in fact to be the same blind hatred that was brought against African Americans in the 1900's. Doesn't anyone remember the story of Matthew Shepard, that poor young guy beaten to death by two (for lack of a better word) monsters. This is EXACTLY like the civil rights movement faced by African Americans. Civil Liberties ARE Civil Liberties. Both groups fought/are fighting for equallity in today's society. Just because one group was being discriminated on because of skin colour, and the other becase of sexual preference does not make them different. Discrimination is discrimination. Hate crimes are hate crimes. And Ignorance is still Ignorance. How is the death of a homosexual due to a hate crime any different then the death of an african-american from the same cause? It isn't different. It seems strange to me that in the "free-est" country in the world, we are unable to grant basic civil rights to people based on who they love. They say hind-sight is 20/20, yet after all the time it took to get African-Americans the rights they deserve, why are we so blind we cannot see the connection today that Homosexuals aren't getting the rights they deserve. When we deny basic rights and freedoms to any group, we take away their humanity, and in doing so lose our own.

Since none of the other ignorant shits out there commented, I suppose I must do so in behalf of them and myself.
I think you are correct in comparing the gay rights movement to the black civil rights movement. Although they may not be exactly the same, you state the most important point. That point is that hate and prejudice are hate and prejudice in any case. In the civil rights arena, the gay rights movement is the next major civil rights movement to come.
People of color have made important progress in the realm of civil rights. Legally, these rights are protected. However, it is important to remember that prejudice and discrimination are still heavily present in the lives of many members of minority groups. Of course all progress in civil rights for all people should be celebrated, but it should be remembered that there is still progress to be made.
there will always be room for progress no matter what the area, but you're completely right in saying that just because the rights are there and protected prejudice still exists. no matter how much progress is made there will always be those people who are blinded by ignorance.
